The School enjoys one of the highest graduate employment records of the university with prospects for careers in pharmacy and pharmaceutical industries. The School has 12 large teaching laboratories, for the teaching of Pharmacy Practice, pharmaceutical technology, targeting of drugs, chemical synthesis, instrumental chemical analysis and spectroscopic studies, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and a laboratory for using computer aided learning packages. The comprehensive library in the school accommodates a large number of books, journals and databases. The School has a good record of research and development activities. Some of the principal areas of research at the school are drug targeting, pharmaceutical analysis, Quantitative Structure-Activity relationships (QSAR), extraction, authentication and screening of active ingredients, pharmacological investigations on actions and mechanisms of drug treatment and chemical synthesis of pharmacologically active compounds.
Pharmacy Doctorate (Pharm.D) The programme is designed for a successful career in pharmacy. The graduates find employment as community pharmacists and clinical pharmacists. In addition, the pharmaceutical industry offers job opportunities in research and development, production, management and information. The course provides quality education and training in all relevant pharmaceutical sciences. Several academic staff in universities all around Iran are graduates of this school. Over forty full-time members of academic staff who collectively exhibit a wide range of experience and expertise in pharmacy disciplines deliver the course. Doctorate of Pharmacy program is a five-year course and graduates become professionally qualified and register with The Pharmaceutical Society of Iran. The curriculum includes various theoretical and practical modules and training (in pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical industry or hospital), and a research project must be completed in three semesters leading to the preparation of a Pharm.D thesis. The topics covered by the modules involve design, extraction and synthesis of active ingredients, formulation and drug delivery systems, testing and quality control, storage and use of drugs, therapeutics and pharmacology. Candidates seeking admission must hold a high school diploma in science and successfully pass the National University Entrance Examination administered annually by the Ministry of Sciences, Researches and Technology. Ph.D courses PhD studentships are available through the school in the field of pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics and pharmacology. The applicants should hold a Pharm.D degree with a minimum average grade of 75%. The curriculum involves forty-three credit units of which, twenty-three are theoretical and twenty are project work for the thesis. A PhD can be completed in 4-5 years.
The school actively participates in research and education, with chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical, industrial pharmaceutics, toxicology and other research quality control laboratories. Laboratory facilities worth mentioning are: tableting and suppository-making devices, NMR200 and NMR60, several FTIR and UV spectophotometers, formulation of ointments, measurement of dermal absorption, Carl Fisher, dissolution tester, physiograph, analytical and preparative HPLC and Gc instruments and modern computers. Library facilities 6500 volumes of books in English 2000 volumes of books in Persian Journals in 60 headings
This library is connected to
the Internet, Medline (since 1970), taxiline excerptamedica, IPA, Drugs
and Pharmacology.
Funding to support the
research activities is obtained from Research Council of the Tabriz
University of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Health, and industrial
companies. The departments of the school each have several research
laboratories which house a full range of equipment including specialized
items in addition to standard items such as HPLC, Gas chromatography, FTIR,
NMR200, NMR60, dissolution testers, tabletting and particle sizing
equipment physiograph and a computing laboratory which uses molecular
modeling software to enhance the understanding and prediction of
biological activity of drugs. The current research areas of the school
have been listed in the web sites of the School. |
